Foal Patrol scavenger hunt round six answers

June 3rd, 2020

Last week, the Museum shared the fifth round of the Foal Patrol virtual scavenger hunt. Below are the answers. Throughout the coming weeks we will continue to post questions, the answers to which can be found on the Foal Patrol website, education blog and individual mare pages from seasons 1, 2, and 3. Stay tuned!

1. Name the 5 basic colors of thoroughbred horses. The basic colors of thoroughbred horses include black, white, chestnut, gray/roan, and bay.

2. Which mare from Season 2 had a racing career in England? Silver Colors

3. Do thoroughbreds generally prefer to be alone or with other horses? Thoroughbred horses are social animals. They benefit greatly from interacting with horses as well as other animals for friendship. You'll see many of the Foal Patrol mares and foals in a paddock with other horses.

4. What does a foal do after birth? After birth, a foal will focus on standing and gaining balance. Once that is established, the foal will focus on their suckling reflex and nursing to gain antibodies from colostrum in milk.

Magical World20 receives visit from a farrier

Magical World
June 3rd, 2020

Magical World20 received a visit from a farrier earlier this week. In the video below, watch him receive a hoof trim. This is done every three weeks to stay on top of the excess growth that the foal is not wearing down naturally and to shape the foot. This is important maintenance in keeping the hoof castle symmetrical and aligned as the foal walks and bears weight.

Magical World
June 3rd, 2020

Chris Baker shares this update on Magical World's pregnancy. Below is a video of the ultrasound scan of her 42 day old embryo from Friday May 29, 2020. The form within the dark sphere is the embryo within it’s vesicle in mare’s uterus. The ultrasound provides an image of a clear heartbeat. This continues to show a healthy, normally developing embryo at the present time.
