Via Veneto Lives On...

April 27th, 2018

Via Veneto lives on in our memories of her and in her beautiful, energetic filly.  Today, Via Veneto 18 met her "nurse mare"; they've bonded and all seems to be going well.  This is a photo of the filly sent to us by the farm after her first dinner with her surrogate mom, Rosie.  We'll meet Rosie later and learn more about the role "nurse mares" play in raising healthy foals.

To be honest, we at Foal Patrol have had a very emotional day and we've struggled with how to handle what's happened and how best we can support the family and friends at Double Diamond.  We cannot thank all of you enough for all the love and support you've shared through your posts, calls and emails.   We hope you stay with us as we continue to update Via Veneto's Foal Patrol page and as we honor her memory.

A Good Natured Mare...

April 27th, 2018

Statement from the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame and Double Diamond Farm:

It is with a heavy heart we at the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame and Foal Patrol offer our deepest condolences to everyone at Double Diamond Farm. Via Veneto delivered a vibrant bay filly last night at 8:42 at a clinic near the Florida farm. Unfortunately, complications developed after the birth and Via Veneto passed away.

Via Veneto’s foal is resting comfortably and getting the support she needs. She was able to receive the colostrum from Via Veneto, which is vital to the health of newborn foals.

The filly and the nurse mare will be coming back to Double Diamond Farm soon.

Please continue to follow Foal Patrol for updates.

False Alarm!

April 25th, 2018

Via Veneto had us all convinced she was going to deliver tonight -- on her due date!  Jimmy Alexander, Double Diamond Farm Manager explains that we just experienced Via Veneto's false labor.  She's fine and will deliver when she's ready!!

Via's Due!

April 25th, 2018

The folks at Double Diamond Farm tell us that today Via Veneto is starting to show signs of a fuller bag with some waxing.  Even though Via Veneto has typically gone six to seven days beyond her due date with her previous foals, they're saying her physical signs are showing she will probably foal very close to her due date --- which is today!
