Happy #SecondCareerSaturday on Foal Patrol in partnership with the Retired Racehorse Project. We think you'll love this week's installment:

A successful life cycle for the Thoroughbred isn’t always winning a major stakes and going on to a breeding career — finding a niche as a sport horse is every bit a marker of “success” as being draped in roses in the winner’s circle! And no one’s found success quite like Dial Operator (Dialed In), who is aiming for the 2022 Retired Racehorse Project's Thoroughbred Makeover. Erica Rossner has known “Zero” since he was a foal, and she took the photo of him on the left at his home farm in New Jersey. She helped start him under saddle and asked his owners to let her know when it was time for him to retire. Now he’s in training for a show horse career with Rossner, who is riding him in the photo on the right!

Enjoy our newest installment of #SecondCareerSaturday on Foal Patrol in partnership with the Retired Racehorse Project:

Happy Preakness Stakes Day! The Preakness runs at Pimlico in Maryland. Did you know that Maryland was the birthplace of Thoroughbred racing in the United States? It’s also the home state of the Retired Racehorse Project! Maryland was well-represented at the RRP’s 2021 Mega-Makeover. Among many horses bred in Maryland, two discipline winners rose to the very top: Legend’s Hope with Jazz Napravnik won the 2020 Eventing and was named People’s Choice winner, and Forthegreatergood won the 2021 Field Hunter and Thoroughbred Makeover Champion!

We have shared many OTTB stories with you this season, but many of those stories covered the outcomes of retraining Thoroughbreds after their racing careers. What are some considerations for OTTB horses, their owners, and their trainers during that initial period of transition from the track? This article by Dr. Bill Vandergrift available in the Retired Racehorse Project's online educational library, provides a great overview of things to expect and pointers for those first 100 days.

#SecondCareerSaturday in partnership with the Retired Racehorse Project is back with this week's edition:

Racehorses wear some specialized equipment that helps them perform their job to the peak of their ability. This helpful article from the Retired Racehorse Project’s educational library explains what you might see at the track, how it works, and why a trainer might choose to add that equipment to their racehorse!
